The difference
Is a Follower the Same as a Friend?
No. A friendship is agreed by both people. A follow is one-way: someone chooses to see your public posts. Press a part of the diagram.
Friends only
Both of you agreed to connect. A friend can see what you share with friends.
The free tool does not add friends. It never sends or accepts friend requests.
Friends who also follow
On Facebook a friend usually follows you as well, so they count on both sides.
Nothing changes here either.
Followers only
People who chose to see your public posts in their feed without being your friend.

Before you start
Why Does the Follow Button Matter?
Because nobody can follow a profile that does not allow it. Flip the switch to see what a visitor finds.
Followers allowed. Visitors see a Follow button, so the free tool can work.
Followers not allowed. Visitors see only Add friend. Requests on this profile cannot land.
Simplified drawing. Facebook keeps this option in its settings under a name like "Who can follow me", and the exact menu changes over time.

The link of the profile itself: facebook.com/yourname, or the longer form with a number in it. Try yours.

- Public post
- A post anyone can see, marked by a small globe. Followers who are not friends see only these.
- Friends-only post
- A post shared with friends. Followers who are not friends do not see it.
- Professional mode
- A Facebook setting for profiles aimed at creators. Meta says that with it anyone can follow you.
- Facebook Page
- A public presence for a business, brand or community. It is separate from a profile.

- The stream of posts a person sees on Facebook, ordered by ranking.
- Feed ranking
- The process that orders posts for each person, using predictions about what they will value.
